Intro to Fire SkinkFire Skink are medium sized, terrestrial lizards native to Western Africa. They can get over a food long and weigh as much as 75+ grams. With proper husbandry and care, they can live around 15+ years in captivity. Fire Skinks are a shy species and spend the majority of their time burrowed or in a hide.
Fire Skinks CareFire Skinks feed readily on a variety of insects, small rodents, eggs, and even wet dog/cat food. Dusting with multivitamins and calcium will help with proper growth. Decorating their enclosures with foliage, caves, and logs will help them feel safe and offer enrichment. The minimum terrarium size for a Fire Skink is a 20 gallon long tank or something with similar dimensions. They do well with a hot spot of 90 degrees F, an ambient temperature of 75 degrees F, and a humidity level of ~65%. The humidity can easily be achieved with 4-6 inches of proper substrate like Eco Earth, ReptiSoil, or Coco mixed with Moss. With this species you have options for lighting! You can use either a basking spot or a heat pad since this species burrows. You may also use a Tropical UVB. The last important component to their enclosure is a water dish and food bowl.
